Other Muscles at Play
Anterior and posterior spinal stabilizers keep the spine in neutral and provide lumbo-pelvic stabilization.
Hip flexors and knee extensors keep the hips and knees flexed and hold the body weight up off the feet and lower leg.
Hip extensors assist the anterior stabilizers with the lumbo-pelvic stabilization and assist the hip flexors and knee extensors to keep the knee stabilized and the body weight lifted off the feet and lower leg.
Shoulder extensors and adductors keep the upper arms tight to the body and held back.
Scapular adductors and depressors keep the scapulae pulled together and down away from the ears.
Plantar flexors keep the feet pointed.
Objectives
Enhance trunk stability while strengthening the shoulder and elbow extensor muscles.
Engaging the mid/upper back muscles and posterior deltoids helps keep the shoulder blades wide and down, without squeezing them together.
Positioning the arms and torso offers support and helps the body sustain the correct posture.
Focus on breathing to synchronize the movement.
